The Origin Song Contest 01, often referred to as TOSC 01, was the first edition of The Origin Song Contest. It was held in Kraków, Poland. It was the first time Poland hosted the contest. TVP selected the Tauron Arena as venue for the edition, whilst Paulina Sykut-Jeżyna and Anna Popek were chosen as hosts.

Thirty three countries participated in the contest. All the countries were making their debut.

The winner of the edition was Finland with the song "Elefantin Paino" performed by Ellinoora. The song scored 130 points, only one more than the runner up, Sweden. Ukraine finished in third place with 127 points, whilst Monaco, the Netherlands and Norway completed the top six of the edition. The host country, Poland, came 9th.

Location

For more information, see Kraków.

Kraków is the second largest and one of the oldest cities in Poland. Situated on the Vistula River in the Lesser Poland region, the city dates back to the 7th century. The city has grown from a Stone Age settlement to Poland's second most important city. It began as a hamlet on Wawel Hill and was already being reported as a busy trading centre of Slavonic Europe in 965. With the establishment of new universities and cultural venues at the emergence of the Second Polish Republic in 1918 and throughout the 20th century, Kraków reaffirmed its role as a major national academic and artistic centre. It is one of Poland's most important economic hubs. The city has a population of approximately 760,000, with approximately 8 million additional people living within a 100 km radius of its main square.

Bidding Phase

Four Polish cities applied to host the contest. These were Gdańsk-Sopot with the Ergo Arena, Kraków with the Tauron Arena, Warsaw with the Torwar Hall and Wrocław with the Centennial Hall.

The host city was revealed to be Kraków on 21st January 2017.

Semi-final Allocation Draw

As there were two semi-finals, countries were allocated into these by geographical location to ensure fairness. The draw took place on Saturday 4th February at the Cloth Hall in Kraków.

The countries were split into pots and allocated into both their semi-final and the half of that semi-final they will perform in. The final running order was then decided based on smaller groups rather than all of the participating countries.

Albania, Belgium, Romania and Serbia were drawn as wildcards and were able to choose their semi-final starting positions. This was the only time wildcards were used and they were phased out for the final and subsequent editions.

The six pots were the following:

Pot 1 Pot 2 Pot 3
Pot 4 Pot 5 Pot 6

Running Order Draw

A draw took place to decide the running order starting positions of all of the semi-finalists. In addition, the starting position of host country Poland was allocated as second position. The draw took place on Friday 10th February, at the Cloth Hall, just like the allocation draw.

Previews and Betting Odds

The entries from each participating country were previewed in short recaps called Previews. The countries were divided into the previews based on when they revealed their entry: the first countries to reveal their entries were in the first preview. Broadcasters can rank each entry in the recap.

Betting odds were based around the average rank of a country in the recap. The betting odds represented the chances of each country to win the contest. The first placed country in the betting odds was Finland with odds of 1.43, followed by the United Kingdom and the Netherlands with odds of 2.33 and 2.57 respectively. The three countries lowest in the betting odds were Hungary, Lithuania and Portugal with odds of 5.00, 5.57 and 5.98 respectively.

Out of these, the bottom three countries all failed to qualify for the final. The betting odds successfully predicted Finland as winner, however runner up United Kingdom ended up significantly lower, in twelfth place.

The positions of Finland, Poland and Italy were successfully predicted. The countries with the largest difference were Luxembourg, who finished fourteen places lower, and Sweden, who finished fourteen higher.

During the live show of the first semi-final, there were technical issues before and during Lithuania's performance. Therefore, Monika Linkytė was allowed to perform "Krentu žemyn" after all the other countries had performed.

Notes

  1. Due to technical difficulties before Lithuania's performance, the country was given a second chance to perform following Belgium.
